about

Steven Loewy on Lex Luna in Cadence Magazine, 2008:

Thomas Heberer has made a good name for himself based in large part on his fiery and thoughtful acumen as a soloist with the ICP Orchestra. This one is Heberer's all the way, as he is featured throughout. His trumpet combines unexpectedly with tuba and drums for a diverse, if short, romp through ten original compositions by the leader. Carl Ludwig Huebsch is experienced with oddball trios, and he is comfortable in the multiple roles of improviser, front line melodicist, and rhythm maker....On the album's longest track, Das Denkende Auge, on which Christian Thomé shows his considerable mettle as a percussionist, the in-and-out changes contrast a radical, Dionysian, and wild solo from Heberer that segues to smooth and melodic styling. Each piece is different, and surprises abound, though Heberer's depth as a trumpeter is likely to be the greatest wonder to those unfamiliar with his work....Funny und die Vögel and Palladium are the jazziest tracks, with Heberer growling a bit on the former, while blowing a very cool horn on the latter. Although there are occasionally glimpses of the old-time brass band, such as on the march-like Der Knees Knigge, it is the memorable, catchy melodies on Die Schnirker Schnurre and Yksi-Kaksi-Kolme that impress the most, while Moritz und der Mond develops a compelling groove.
